Why learn Chinese at all?

There is a growing demand for Chinese lessons as many people rush to learn the language. Meanwhile many other people wonder why they should bother learning to speak Chinese. There is no shortage of reasons that somebody would want to learn a foreign language and this is especially true of Chinese. There is no getting around the fact that China is now a major player on the world stage and this has made now the perfect time to learn to speak Chinese.

There are lots of reasons to learn Chinese but most people want to learn for career reasons. As China becomes a world power more and more companies are doing business with the Chinese. This has led to an increased demand for people who speak the language. There are many career opportunities available for people who can speak Chinese, especially if they can also speak English. This demand will only grow as China continues its rise and actually surpasses the United States and becomes the world's dominant superpower. One of the best ways to get ahead at work is to be able to speak Chinese.

The growth of China into a superpower means that there are advantages to speaking the language that go far beyond doing business with the Chinese themselves. In much the same way that the dominance of the United States has made English the unofficial world language we will eventually see the same thing happen with Chinese. It will likely start with the countries that neighbor China and spread out from there but eventually Chinese will be language of commerce and diplomacy. Most of this is done in English these days but that will eventually change.

As China opens its doors and becomes more and more a part of the world community there are an increasing number of people visiting the country. In recent years China has become a major tourist destination. There are plenty of reasons for this, few countries have anything like the history that China does. Of course your trip will be much easier and much more enjoyable if you can speak at least a little bit of the language.

A lot of people choose to learn Chinese just for the personal satisfaction of doing it. Learning a new language is a major challenge and this is especially true of a language as difficult as Chinese. Taking on a challenge like this and successfully accomplishing it is an achievement that is well worth celebrating and it makes the effort to learn Chinese well worth it.

There is also a school of thought that says that learning a new language will actually make you smarter. Learning a language is a major intellectual effort that requires you to develop you analytical and reasoning skills. This is said to improve those skills and actually make you smarter. Many people choose to learn Chinese simply for the intellectual stimulation.
